WE DID THE WORK TO FIND THE BEST AND THESE ARE THE RESULTS:
Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret
Quimat Professional Salon Ceramic
Best for the Money
Kiss Products Instawave
Best on a Budget
Curling irons have been around for a long time. We all know how to use them: heat the unit, press the shaft lever to open the iron, wrap hair around the barrel, wait a few seconds, unwind hair, repeat many times, and voilà! Perfect curls! The truth is, perfection will be achieved sometimes and even then it comes with a lot of effort.
Now we have a new entrant into the market – the automatic hair curler. It replaces your traditional curling iron by adding automation into the picture and promises better, easier, and sleeker curls. We love these promises. The biggest hair issue for many women is having hair that cooperates. If a product can help achieve the look we want affordably and in less time than the old way, then we have a winner.
In this review, we have narrowed the field down to three automatic hair curlers we deem worth considering. In this review, we reveal the overall best automatic hair curler, the best automatic hair curler for the money, and the best automatic hair curler on a budget.
Best Automatic Hair Curler
This is considered by us the best automatic hair curler on the market!
The Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret Hair Curler is our #1 pick because it really gives hair a salon-finished look. It minimizes frizz, enhances shine and rarely tangles. Plus the Conair brand means you are purchasing a quality product. In fact, it is backed by a limited 5-year warranty so you really can’t go wrong. It is available for $80.
We also love that the Infiniti Pro is really giving the hair curler category something we haven’t seen before. It feeds your hair into a curl chamber and after a few seconds, the result is a beautiful corkscrew curl. It’s a very cool premise – unlike old school curling irons or hot rollers, we feel that this type of curler represents true innovation in the category. And ultimately, it produces fabulous results.
One shortcoming some users may encounter is that hair might tangle but we truly believe this will be minimized by patience as you’re learning to use it, and by following the instructions properly.
Best Automatic Hair Curler for the Money
The Quimat Automatic Hair Curler is a great option for folks who want to enter this market but who don’t want to invest as much as is required for the Infiniti Pro. It’s available for $60. The Quimat is very similar to the Infiniti Pro in many ways but it also includes a very useful LCD display screen so you can monitor temperature settings very precisely. We also really love the useful guide it provides to produce the right type of curls you want based on the
Overall, it performs similarly to the Infiniti Pro but it isn’t backed by the same strong brand name. Further, it doesn’t feel quite as robust. We also found it was a little cumbersome to hold but users would get used to this no doubt. That said, it produces very nice curls so we think buyers will be happy with this product as well.
Best Automatic Hair Curler on a Budget
Patent pending curl dial creates left-or right-facing curls
The Instawave Automatic Hair Curler is great for those on a budget and for those less adventurous, perhaps. It is available for $40 and is the most similar to a traditional curling iron of those we review here.
Its differentiating feature is that it feeds hair automatically around the curling iron shaft with the touch of a button. It resembles a traditional curling iron. So think old school curling iron with automation added and suddenly we have a great innovative product. If your preference for an automatic hair curler is for your hair to remain visible the whole while it’s curling, then this is likely the right product for you.
The biggest criticisms we have of this product are that, first – it is a little tough to master; and second – there is no easy way to set it down in between curls. We’d really like if it had flat base so it could be placed on a counter.
Why you need an Automatic Hair Curler
An automatic hair curler is a great device if you are looking for full-bodied curls in less time than it takes with a traditional curling iron or hot rollers. The idea behind it is that you can produce salon-style curls in the comfort of your home without spending hours doing so.
The key to this is “automation”. With the automatic hair curlers reviewed here, there is no twisting your hair around the shaft of a curling iron or twisting your wrist to get that curl effect. Automatic hair curlers do all the twisting of you. In fact, many automatic hair curlers promise a full head of curls in less than 15 minutes.
Some of the newest hair curlers on the market include a curl chamber which automatically pulls your hair inside the mechanism and then releases it to produce a perfect corkscrew-style curl. So if you are interested in trying a new and more efficient way to get curls, an automatic hair curler might be perfect for you.
There aren’t yet a plethora of automatic hair curlers on the market yet since the category is still somewhat unknown to many, but regardless we have narrowed the search down for you by reviewing three automatic hair curlers here. The following guide represents a great starting point as you begin to shop for yours.
What makes a great Hair Curler – The Buyer’s Guide
There are several key things you want to consider when in the market for an Automatic Hair Curler. The following elements will set you off on the right foot.
Consider if you want your hair to be visible during the curl process. Some curlers require that you feed your hair right into a curl chamber while others automatically wrap hair around a visible barrel.
Consider the type of curl you want to have and if the curler provides options for size of curl and temperature settings, the latter of which is important to setting the curl.
Ease of use:
Some curlers are more finicky to use than others. Watch videos of the products in action to determine if you can master the process.
Consider the brand of the automatic hair curler. Some brands are known for higher quality products than others. Also factor in whether or not the product is backed by a warranty and whether or not it is made of quality material that will withstand your expected frequency of use.
Ultimately, will the automatic hair curler perform its intended duty in an effective fashion? If it’s not an improvement over your usual curling iron or hot curlers, then it’s not worth it.
Also a huge pet peeve relating to hair apparatuses is the tangle factor! None are worth it if they are going to tangle your hair.
The selection of products available means you can find one right for your budget.
Best Automatic Hair Curler – Full Review
We consider the Infiniti Pro Curl Secret to be the best overall hair curler. It feels like a salon quality product and includes some very nice features. It is a bit of an investment at the $80 mark but it is worth every penny. Quality will not be an issue with this hair curler.
This curler is very simple to use. At the touch of a button, your hair is drawn into a curl chamber where it seems like magic is performed because straight hair goes in, and perfect, bouncing curls come out. Curling hair has honestly never been simpler.
The Infiniti Pro enables you to choose between loose, medium or tight curls depending on your preference. It’s great that it includes options like this because users may want different curls depending on their mood or the occasion.
We particularly love that this brush is equipped with “Tourmaline” ceramic technology that ensures salon-quality curls for your hair and prevents fizziness and flyaways without damaging hair. The handle is ergonomic in design so it’s very comfortable to hold. Overall the Infiniti Pro is very smooth to operate which is paramount in a unit like this.
This automatic hair curler heats up very quickly and also comes equipped with two heat settings and three timer settings for maximum versatility. These features are essentially what control the type of curl that is produced. The highest heat setting goes to 400 degrees which is in line with the competition.
It comes equipped with an automatic shut off feature which is great from a safety and energy conservation perspective. Conair also promises a long life motor which we’d expect. Plus it comes equipped with a limited 5-year warranty which is a must-have.
Overall, this curler is really nice to use if you get it right (see weaknesses below). The hair flows through easily and doesn’t tangle (most of the time). The design is sleek and smooth and the quality is spot on.
The truth of the matter is that there is a learning curve to using an automatic hair curler like this. It will likely take a few “tries” before you get it right. This means you might encounter tangles to begin with so proceed slowly. We recommend using small sections of hair to achieve the best results.
One major enhancement would be a release button to help deal with tangles. Users who encountered major tangles were stuck struggling to unlock hair from inside the unit. We do worry that users will either LOVE it or HATE it. That said, our research indicates most really do love it.
Gives hair great salon-style finish.
Needs a release button to help with tangles.
Best Automatic Hair Curler for the Money – Full Review
We consider the Quimat Hair Curler to be the best automatic hair curler for the money. It does very well on all of the key features. Further, it is very reasonably priced at the $60 mark and is definitely worth the investment. Unlike the Infiniti Pro, it comes equipped with an LCD display, which we really like. It takes the guesswork out of the heat which means you have more control over your curls.
Like the Infiniti Pro, it operates by feeding hair into a curl chamber. This automatic hair curler has many strengths. As mentioned, it is the only one reviewed that has an LCD display. Since heat is the major factor in determining how the curls turn out, having a very precise heat reading is a truly nice perk.
It also comes equipped with three curl time settings – each of which is followed by a beep to let you know when your curl is complete. This curler also enables you to choose the direction of your curl which is another important feature. It also comes with three temperature settings – 375, 410 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit. We also really love that the Quimat provides great guidelines for what temperatures and curl time settings to use for what, as follows:
– 375 is for fine hair
– 410 is for medium hair
– 450 is for thick hair
– 8 seconds for slight wave
– 10 seconds for soft curl
– 12 seconds for strong, tight curl
Like the other curlers reviewed, it also has a brushless motor which promises a long life, fast heat up, and tangle free results.
This hair curler also comes with a 12-month warranty and a 45-day money back guarantee. We really like that Quimat is backing their product with these promises
Some users complain that their hair got stuck inside the curling mechanism. Like the Infiniti Pro, this type of hair curler will take a little practice to get the hang of.
While we didn’t have any problems with tangles, we did find it awkward to hold. It is more cumbersome than the Infiniti Pro but this is more of a minor criticism than anything else.
We aren’t sure about the overall quality of the unit. It doesn’t feel as robust as the Infiniti Pro and the brand name isn’t one we are familiar with. That said, we didn’t encounter any quality issues but we feel more confident in the Infiniti Pro from a “built to last” perspective.
LCD display and curl guidelines.
Best Automatic Hair Curler on a Budget – Full Review
Patent pending curl dial creates left-or right-facing curls
We consider the Kiss Instawave Automatic Hair Curler to be a great product for those on a budget but it is different than the other products we review here. It is available at the $40 mark and is the closest product to a traditional curling iron with the addition of automation. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it doesn’t promise as much as the other two automatic hair curlers do.
The Instawave does have some nice features. To start, many people appreciate that their hair doesn’t disappear into a black box when it is being curled. Your hair is visible the whole time. As mentioned, it is the most similar to a traditional curling iron of the products we review here. The main difference is that the shaft rotates so the Instawave does the work for you. And “yes” it does rotate in both directions so you can create a natural looking set of curls.
It has two heat settings which we appreciate, and also comes equipped with an auto shut-off feature. We also like that it heats up really quickly. Its hottest setting is 420 which we also like because it means your hair is more likely to hold the curl. Like its peers, this curler incorporates ceramic ionic technology which promises to minimize fizziness and damage.
Above and beyond anything else, this product works, works well, and is easy to use. It’s definitely a step up from a regular curling iron and makes the job much more efficient!
The Instawave is available in only one barrel size – 1 inch. This means you’ll always have the same curl diameter. It would be nice if a larger barrel were available for people with longer hair.
This hair curler is also a little tough to master. Some users never got the hang of it. We suspect a lot of it has to do with hair type and user error. Thickness and texture will play a role here. The reality is that the Instawave likely works better for certain hair types.
It’s also a negative that there is no way to set this curler down as you are prepping your next section of hair. Ideally the base should have a flat section so it can easily be rested as you are working through your hair.
Keeps hair tangle-free during styling.
Not as effective on some hair types.
One reality we came across in our research is that many consumers found their hair got tangled in automatic hair curlers in general, especially the ones that work with a curl chamber – a.k.a. the black box of automatic hair curlers. We believe that much of this has to do with user error, hair type, and/or amount of hair fed into the chamber.
We are the first to admit that these curlers have a learning curve and will take a little practice. So start slow, test small sections of hair out, and figure out which settings and features work for you. Do this on a rainy day when you aren’t trying to do your hair for a special event or an important work meeting. Patience may be part of the key to finding success with these products.
Having said all of that, people who love them really LOVE them. We do too but we want you to go in with eyes wide open!
The last thing you want is for it not to function the way you’d hoped or for it not to last or for it to tangle your hair. If you can make the investment, go with Infiniti Pro by Conair Curl Secret. It represents the best in innovation and the best in brand name. Its warranty means you can’t go wrong and so many users swear by it, we think you will too.
